Please read the following information carefully to ensure you fulfill all the membership requirements for the membership category.

Certified Roof Inspector

A Certified Roof Inspector can issue an ITC-SA "A19" certificate confirming a roofs compliance with the National Building Regulations that is signed by their responsible Accredited Timber Engineer. Ultimate responsibility for the roof design and erection remains with the Accredited Timber Engineer on whose behalf a Certified Roof Inspectors does roof inspections.


Prerequisites of membership

To qualify for the designation as Certified Roof Inspector, the applicant must have prior experience in roof design and construction, and should preferably have a recognized qualification (NQF level 5) in the built environment. This qualification may be in the fields of civil engineering, architecture, quantity surveying, and construction management.

Prior to registration, the applicant Roof Inspector will work under an identified mentor, and will be referred to as a probationary Roof Inspector.

The Applicant Roof Inspector will undergo a minimum 2 day classroom session under the direction of any ITC-SA Accredited Timber Engineer. After the completion of the classroom sessions, an exam will be written; and an oral examination conducted where deemed to be in the best interest of the student; and then an on-site test will be done to confirm the ability of the inspector.

The Roof Inspectors applying for registration under this designation will be required to complete the above set requirements within a period of 12 months.

Membership applications can be completed online.

The following information is required when applying for membership as an Accredited Timber Engineer:

  • Personal and contact detail
  • Employment details
  • Details of relevant qualifications
  • ECSA membership
  • Proof of completion for relevant courses

You will need to upload the following documents with your application:

  • Your ID document or passport
  • Your ECSA membership certificate
  • Proof of educational qualifications and courses completed

You will need to have in your possession, or have reasonable access to all relevant SANS manuals required by the timber roofing industry.

You will need to agree to the Terms and Conditions of Membership and to abide by the Code of Conduct of the ITC-SA.


CPD Requirements

To maintain the Professional Designation of Cerfitied Roof Inspector, members are required to accumulate 4 CPD points annually by completing a range of accredited activities such as:

  • Attend workshops, seminars and information sessions
  • Give presentations to internal and external groups
  • Facilitate workshops
  • Write articles for in-house and general publications
